Beyond Star Ratings

Why India Needs a Consumer Experience Platform

A 4.2 star rating tells you nothing.

It doesn't tell you what happens when your delivery doesn't arrive. It doesn't tell you how long the refund took. It doesn't tell you whether the brand acknowledged the problem or ignored it completely.

Yet every day, millions of Indian consumers make purchase decisions based on exactly that — a number between one and five, aggregated from thousands of reviews of varying quality, authenticity, and relevance.

We built Grumble because we believe Indian consumers deserve better.

The problem with star ratings

Star ratings were designed for a simpler time. When e-commerce was new, a five-star system was a revelation. Suddenly, strangers could help each other make decisions.

But the system has been gamed.

Brands incentivise positive reviews. Fake accounts flood platforms with five-star ratings. Negative reviews get buried, reported, or simply drowned out. The result is a sea of 4.2s and 4.3s that tell you almost nothing about what your actual experience will be.

In India, this problem is acute. A brand can have thousands of genuine complaints on consumer forums, social media, and WhatsApp groups — and still maintain a 4.4 rating on Google.

The rating exists. The experience doesn't.

What consumers actually want to know

When a consumer researches a brand before making a decision, they're not looking for an average. They're looking for answers to specific questions:

What goes wrong with this brand?

How often does it happen?

When something goes wrong, does the brand respond?

Has anyone actually gotten a resolution?

These are not questions a star rating can answer. They require structured, detailed, publicly visible experiences — documented by real consumers, on the record.

The India context

India is not a homogeneous market. A consumer experience in Mumbai is different from one in Coimbatore. A premium customer's experience with a brand is different from a first-time buyer's.

Yet most consumer platforms treat India as a single data point.

Grumble is built for the complexity of Indian consumer experience. Structured by category, city, severity, and issue type — every experience adds to a richer picture of how brands actually operate across the country.

When enough Tata Motors owners document their after-sales experiences across different cities, patterns emerge. Certain service centres consistently underperform. Certain issues repeat. That's information a star rating will never surface.

Accountability, not outrage

Grumble is not a complaint forum. It is not built to shame brands or encourage outrage.

It is built on a simple belief — that transparency drives improvement.

Great brands are not those that never make mistakes. They are the ones that acknowledge mistakes, respond publicly, and continuously improve. Grumble makes that process visible.

A brand that resolves complaints quickly and publicly is a brand that deserves consumer trust. A brand that ignores documented complaints is a brand that consumers should know about before they spend their money.

Grumble reflects this differently — not a single number, but a live, factual track record: what was grumbled about, whether the brand responded, and whether it got resolved. A mirror, not a verdict.

What we're building

Grumble is India's consumer experience platform. A place where:

Real experiences are documented, structured, and permanently visible

Researchers can understand how brands actually treat customers

Those who've had bad experiences can be heard — and help others

Brands that care can respond publicly and demonstrate accountability

We are starting with Automotive and Airlines — two categories where consumer experiences are high-stakes, emotionally charged, and chronically underdocumented.

Over time, we will cover every sector of Indian consumer life.
